Aromatherapy Benefits

Instead of learning in general terms about aromatherapy benefits, the question you are probably asking is "How will aromatherapy benefit me?" May be you even think aromatherapy is just for certain people - you know all this smelly stuff and you are not into smelly stuff. The truth is aromatherapy has many health enhancing benefits that go beyond smell.

Aromatherapy is the science of using essential oils. Essential oils have properties that when inhaled, applied to the body, or ingested, will impart these attributes to you where they will be taken into the body and utilized.

We all know that what you eat provides nutrients so that the body can function. We eat good fats for our brain, green leafy vegetables for vitamins and minerals and proteins to build our muscle. In the same way, we use certain essential oils because they contain traits that our body can use.

For example, if you bang your knee you may get a bruise. If you wanted to pick an essential oil to help heal the bruise you would look for one that is good for circulation, strengthens blood capillaries and discourages fluid retention. You might want to try cypress oil which is wonderful for circulation or geranium which for centuries has been used for regenerating and healing skin conditions.

What if you are catching a cold? Diffusing essential oils is a wonderful way to bring the healing properties directly into your lungs. With a cold you might have a sore throat, itchy eyes, and a sinus headache. Here you would look for oils that are good for respiratory system as well as good at helping the body defend itself once the cold has started. Oils such as ravensara and eucalyptus radiata are antiviral as well as expectorant.

You can fight an infection in various ways, such as through diffusion, bodily application and ingestion. Using an oil such as melaleuca alternifolia (tea trea,) a powerful antibacterial and antiviral oil, on the tongue may also help to soothe an aching throat.

As you can see, there are many benefits to using aromatherapy. When you begin to learn the chemistry of the various plants you can then choose which oil to used based upon the unique healing properties contained within each plant.

I started to learn about essential oils one plant at a time. It is easy to start with an oil such as lavender - which is also called the Swiss Army Knife of oils because it has so many wonderful properties. By starting to learn one plant at a time, you will soon be finding uses for your arsenal of essential oils on a daily baiss.

In order to get the full benefit you are seeking, be sure you use only therapeutic grade essential oils.
